WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG FOR MY BRAIN INJURY TO HEAL?
Approximately 85% of mild traumatic brain injuries resolve within 2 – 3 weeks after the trauma. However, it is the approximately 15% of individuals that can have symptoms that last months, even years.
There are a number of possible reasons for this. First, many times we are not even aware when we have had multiple head traumas as a child, and successive head traumas can lead to having a greater constellation of symptoms and longer healing time.
Pre-existing health conditions, such as blood sugar dysregulation issues can complicate the fuel delivery to an impaired brain, thus slowing recovery. Individuals that have colitis, Crohn’s, irritable bowel syndrome or leaky gut syndrome can have a protracted recovery owing to the gut brain connection.
When one has sustained head trauma there is a degree of inflammation in the brain. When one has inflammation in the gut, there can be concomitant inflammation in the brain as well. Therefore, it is important to not only assess and treat immediate concussion symptoms, but also address any pre-existing health conditions that may have a bearing on recovery.
