Are There Tests to Validate a Brain Injury?

One of the most common things I hear from patients presenting with post concussion syndrome is that they feel no one believes they have a brain injury, or that their symptoms are due to some other cause.

Let’s face it - concussions are a very complex injury to a very complex area of the body, not to mention it is an invisible injury. Most people think that if you can walk and talk then you are fine. Furthermore, the most complex testing like CAT scans and MRIs - although useful - are of little value to detect a brain injury that does not, for example, demonstrate a brain bleed.

Are There Tests To Validate Your Injury?

So, the question is this: are there tests to validate your injury? The answer is a resounding “YES”! Simply put, different areas of the brain and brainstem are associated with specific eye movements and maintaining balance. Giving the individual certain oculomotor and balance tasks and comparing the results to those within normal limits gives us a window into the general function of that part of the brain.

The Effect of Injury to Different Parts of the Brain

Frontal Lobe - Loss of movement, difficulty planning complex tasks, difficulty with concentration, inability to express language, personality change, and impulsiveness.

Temporal Lobe - Difficulty understanding conversation and recognizing facial emotions, difficulty retaining new information, emotional disturbance, and impaired memory.

Parietal Lobe - Difficulty differentiating left and right, difficulty drawing objects, navigation challenges, lack of body awareness, and visual attention challenges.

Occipital Lobe - Difficulty with reading and writing, visual hallucinations, difficulty with locating objects and perceiving moving objects, and difficulty recognizing shapes/colors.

Midbrain - Light/sound sensitivity, difficulty with reading and with computer screen use, and disturbed sleep rhythms.

Cerebellum - Decreased muscle tone, tremors, balance challenges, involuntary movements, dizziness, dystonia, and slurred speech.
