Who Benefits From This Treatment?

Head-Eye Vestibular Motion Therapy is an effective treatment for:

  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Post-concussion syndrome
  • Physical & mental symptoms and effects

Traumatic brain injury can alter the normal vestibular function, as the brain receives different signals regarding the position & movement of the head. People can feel better and function can return through compensation thanks to a variety of eye exercises. Patients find their condition improving because the brain learns to use other senses.

How Head-Eye Vestibular Motion Therapy is Done

Doctor at Broadview Health Center assessing a teenage patient

Head-eye vestibular motion therapy is meant to train your eyes to track and follow the movements of objects. When a brain injury is sustained, the brain has trouble processing the rapidly changing images sent to it by the eyes as the person moves their body, head and eyes. This is what leads to concussion symptoms such as headaches, blurred vision and dizziness.

The treatment starts off with some diagnostic testing and a variety of eye exercises to see where treatment should be focused. Usually, things will start slow, having the patient perform eye exercises while sitting still. They will be asked to track a moving object as it slowly moves on a set horizontal and vertical axis. As the patient becomes more comfortable with these basic eye movements, they will progress to tracking faster and a wider range of movements, slowly incorporating head and body movements in conjunction with eye movements. This process allows the brain to learn to compensate for its injury and improve vision related symptoms and associated mental health issues.
